The Brit Awards as it happened

Winner of the Night

Winner of the Night

This must be Emeli Sandé’s year because she was the leading star of the awards last night! After having the bestselling album in Britain, performing at the Olympics ceremonies, both the opening and the closing, she just won two Brit awards: Best British Album of the year and Best Female Solo Artist. Looks like last year, when she was named rising star at the Brits by the Critics’ choice awards, was a sort of prediction for her. Only The Beatles had spent more consecutive weeks in the charts than the Scottish singer.

Her acceptance speech for Album of the Year was quite emotional, because she said that having so many people connected to her made her feel incredible and less lonely. She said: Thanks to everybody who let me make the album I wanted to make … This is a dream, really.

Another big winner of the night was Ben Howard, who just like Ed Sheeran last year, got the awards for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Male Artist. His thank yous went to his mother, who got a lot of old friends to vote for me and his agent and team, concluding with the fact that his terrible at speeches. He already sold half a million albums, but after this recognition he could be in for some significant increase.

Mumford& Sons followed their success at the Grammy s  winning the award for Best British Group and gave an awesome performance of their hit “I will wait”, while Marcus Mumford’s wife , lovely Carey Mulligan, was cheering from the audience.

Last night was also the birth of a new award, the global success award, a self-congratulatory prize for the UK music industry which takes a 13% of all global success. The award went, as expected to One Direction, the phenomena that had released two of the top-five albums in USA last year, along Mumford& Sons and Adele.

The show was hosted by comedian James Holden, who made fun of last year’s quarrel with Adele, when he cut off her acceptance speech. Cutting artists off never happens here, not on my watch, not any more, he said. The ceremony was opened by rockers Muse, with their single Supremacy, accompanied by an orchestra and a mesmerizing light show.

Justin Timberlake came back on the Brits Awards after a decade, performing his new single “Mirrors”. He gave a smooth and sophisticated performance, completely different from the 2003 one when he grabbed Kylie Minogue’s behind, making it one of the most memorable moments from the awards history.

Adele had the chance to finish her acceptance speech from last year, when she won the award for Best British Single for her Skyfall song.  She didn’t seem to bother much though, because she chose to remain in L.A. to rehearse for her Oscar performance this weekend. She joked:  I won’t keep you too long, I don’t want to hold up the final performance, and Corden replied at the end of her video: Has she definitely finished? Good.
