Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson will return to her hometown of Wolverhampton today in a bid to find sporting stars of the future.

She hopes to find budding athletes to follow in her footsteps – and hopefully go on to represent the country at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

School head teachers, sport and youth club leaders, councillors and MPs have been invited to an event, hosted by the Tessa Sanderson Foundation and Academy, at the Grand Station Conference Centre in Sun Street between noon and 2pm today.

Tessa Sanderson has said she believes there are countless talented youngsters in the region just waiting to be discovered.

The 1984 javelin champion is holding a special event today as part of a hunt for fresh sporting talent in the Midlands.

I am a proud Midlander myself and I know that there is no shortage of talent to be discovered here – just a shortage of support to help realise that talent and to give these young people the same chance that I was so fortunate to have been able to take.

We believe that within our current Academy there are several youngsters capable of reaching Olympic and Paralympic level and I am excited to extend that opportunity to young people of talent, drive and ambition in the Midlands.
