Richard and Judy Quit ITV’s This Morning Show

Richard and Judy are quitting ITV’s This Morning Show after 13 years of hosting it.  But they’re not leaving television permanently — no vacation plans in sight — they will be hosting their own Richard And Judy show on Channel 4 soon.

TV hosts Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan are quitting ITV’s This Morning after 13 years to present a Channel 4 chat show, it was announced today.

The pair said there had been no bidding war between channels, but they simply wanted to “try something different”.

They are due to move to Channel 4 in the autumn when their current contract with Granada runs out.

The married couple, who last year renewed their wedding vows, have signed a two-year deal to present their new show, to be called Richard And Judy.

Their daily show is still a major hit and was named most popular daytime show at the National Television Awards last year.

The event was also notable for Finnigan’s dress falling down as they picked up their prize, exposing her underwear.

Channel 4 said today that the new series would be a live, topical entertainment show and would air for five days a week.

At the moment the couple only appear on their ITV series for four days with Fern Britton and John Leslie filling in on Fridays.

The idea was brought to Channel 4 by Amanda Ross, managing director of production company Cactus TV, which will produce the series.

Madeley said: “Judy and I have enjoyed 13 wonderful series of This Morning and we will be incredibly sad to say goodbye to all our colleagues at Granada and ITV.

“But with three consecutive National Television Awards under our belt and the ratings buoyant, we are bowing out of This Morning on a high.”

Judy added: “There has been no auction or tug-of-war for our services. We have just decided that we want to try something different and Channel 4 represents a brilliant opportunity to explore a new direction.

“We are looking forward to getting reacquainted with our loyal viewers in a new slot and to the additional challenge of engaging a new audience on a new channel.”

The departure will be a blow for ITV with the couple widely associated with the network.

But ITV are planning to continue with This Morning and are already looking for new presenters.

Maureen Duffy, controller of daytime programmes at ITV, said: “Richard and Judy have made a terrific contribution to ITV of the past 13 years and we wish them well in the future.

“They leave This Morning, Britain’s most popular daytime magazine show in great shape.”

A heartfelt goodbye goes out from us to Richard and Judy. We hate to see them go, but they’ve given all they have and deserve to move on. Let’s hope their replacements are up to their high standards.
