Prioritize Your Comping

Organize (Photo credit: alborzshawn)

Comping is the term used to refer to people who love entering competitions – you may be one of them, or you may be becoming one of them! Either way, once you get into it and become hooked on entering competitions (& hopefully winning prizes!) it can be difficult to stay organised. The best way to organize yourself is to have a priority list; is it your desire to enter the big competitions or the smaller ones? The odds of winning can vary hugely…but it all boils down to your priorities.

And there are a number of things worth considering when prioritising…

1. Your degree of interest in the prize

These can be broken down into three rough groups…

  1. Competitions you would really love to win
  2. Competitions you are indifferent about
  3. Competitions that don’t interest you

Of course no one ever turns down a prize, and there are certainly people who enter competitions with the intention of selling the prizes on, however we reckon it’s better if you enter competitions you are actually interested in winning!

2. Odds of winning vs prize value

These two go hand-in-hand; uite often you will weigh this up in your headwithout even thinking about it. You may deem a competition to be not worth entering due to the high number of expected entrants or to be “too much effort” – in which case the odds of winning are not good enough relative to the prize value &/or effort of entry…which leads us to our next point…

3. Ease of entry

robo formWe often have split opinions on this one. With the advent of helping hands such as Roboform we feel in general you may as well enter all the “easy” competitions you can because these tools make it super-easy & fast. However if you really want a prize and there is a “high barrier to entry” eg you need to submit a poem/picture/recipe then the “odds of winning” will increase as many people will think it is “too much effort”….and so your odds of winning are greatly increased!

So both easy & difficult competitions are worth entering…depending on your interest in the prize and the odds of winning.

By using Roboform you may aswell enter “easy” competitions as it is so fast and with many of the TV competitions offering huge, life-changing prizes you really would be a foolish comper not to submit an entry…or six!

Competition Websites

There are a number of UK competitions websites which can help you find, enter and keep track of your competitions. Each have their own merits, but be sure you choose one which allows you to login & keep track of competions you have entered (otherwise it can get rather confusing!). Some good ones are; socialots, the prize finder, loquax & competition hunter.

Organizing your inbox

As you know, you start receiving a lot of emails when you start entering a lot of competitions; “thanks for your entry”, “please confirm your email”…and maybe even “congratulations”. If you are good with folders & rules you can setup your inbox to automatically sort through these – or flag emails which contain “congratulations!”. We also recommend having a “cut n paste” template containing all the details traditionally required by email-entry competitions (Name, address, Telephone etc) as it saves time.

Finally, be sure to check your emails! I know some people have an email address specifically for comping, similar to having one for work & one (or two!) for personal…however you need to login frequently or you will soon be overwhelmed.

We almost forgot – remember to keep track of any winnings to look back on and make you smile. This can be a simple Word document, Excel sheet or something more “bling bling” like an online blog, diary or Evernote.

Keep winning!
