One of ITV’s most recent competitions this Christmas has been their successful and festive ‘secret santa’ segment. It was devised by producers of the show as a way to celebrate those who were devoted to their families and demonstrated how supportive, kind and caring they were as a person.
However it seems this time they may have got it wrong.
Last week celebrity pop star Brian McFadden surprised Andy Erskine by turning up at his house to show him a video tribute his family had prepared for him as well as congratulate him for the support and care he showed for his family during difficult times. He presented the man with a signed football shirt and a chance to see his team play in the directors box.
His family video certainly seemed to support that Mr Erskine was a great father and husband and told the story of how the man quit his job to care for his wife when she was sadly diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It all seemed very touching at the time, however perhaps suspicions may have been aroused when viewers were told to watch out for Mr Erskine’s colourful language before Brian McFadden entered their home. He also answered the door dressed in a tiger striped onsie. A slightly odd choice for a respectable family man, but hey each to their own.
It was when neighbours began to protest the the media got wind of something afoot. Apparently Mr Erskine may not be all he is cracked up to be. Reports that he is loud, aggressive and has had a criminal past have all been reported in the news. He was jailed for possession of cannabis and driving while disqualified. Neighbours went as far as to describe him as an ‘awful human being’ and far from being the doting husband claim that they constantly hear the couple screaming at each other and his wife is ‘always crying.’ Apparently the children who also appeared on the video praising their father, are in fact quite frightened of him.
Doesn’t seem that he would be at the top of Santa’s list in our book.
The 41 year old from Kings Lynn in Norfolk has had domestic disturbances so loud that police have confirmed they have been called to the address on several occasions.
However Erskine defended himself saying he was young and foolish back in the day when the drug taking arrests took place.
A Daybreak representative commented on the news saying
‘Secret Santa was a Daybreak item running this week where viewers had the chance to thank someone close to them.
‘Wednesday was the turn of viewer, Lisa Erskine who wanted to thank her husband for all of his support during her battle with cancer.’
Mrs Erskine described her husband as her ‘best friend’ and soulmate’ during the clip which seems to contradict with what the neighbours were saying. Whether it’s the truth perhaps is only for them to know.
