Could Kate Thornton be the new Daybreak presenter?

The sacked X Factor presenter could be taking over on ITV’s Daybreak

Kate Thornton has previously made headlines when she was sacked from her presenting job on the X Factor by music mogul Simon Cowell. At the time she claimed that Simon only gave her the chop to cause controversy though dropping ratings figures and her stiff presenting style could have had more to do with it. It may be that he did her a favour though as since then her career has gone from strength to strength with presenting positions on popular British TV shows such as ITV’s Loose Women, Good Morning UK, and of course the Great British favourite, Strictly Come Dancing.

The rumours seem to be fuelled by the same shakeup that seems to be happening across much of ITV’s programming since new ITV Head of Programming, Helen Warner has been in post. Kate’s joining the show could prove to be unpopular though as it could mean the boot for the much loved Lorraine Kelly and her co-host Aled Jones. Warner apparently thinks that Kate Thornton would be perfect to host the show bringing a youthful modernity to the programme in her bid to boost the ratings and to compete with bigger breakfast shows such as BBC Breakfast.

However nothing is yet set in stone and another name to pop out of the rumour mill in terms of a Kelly-Jones replacement is blonde bombshell and maths super-brain Rachel Riley. Rachel found fame taking Carol Vorderman’s  place on popular TV game show Countdown. She has since taken a presenting spot on The Gadget Show.

However Thornton still seems to be front runner and the rumours gained weight when she and Eamon Holmes were spotted together at a recent charity gig where Eamon was dressed as Elvis in a parody talent contest which Kate was hosting.

Warners bid to change the show comes as no surprise. She has already made headlines with her shocking shake-up of Loose Women panelists. Daybreaks ratings have been stuck at the same rate for years (around 70,000) and this isn’t good enough for the new boss. She wants to see a big boost in the ratings and thinks that Kate could help with this.

ITV apparently denied claims that either Lorraine of Aled would be leaving the show but with all the other programme transformations that have been going on at ITV lately we wouldn’t be so sure!
